Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have made a historic move by surpassing foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in terms of their holdings in Indian equities markets. This shift coincides with FIIs' ongoing selling, which is being fueled by market volatility and uncertainty around international trade.
According to data from ACE Equities, as of the March 2025 quarter, DIIs owned approximately 16.91 percent of Indian stocks, somewhat surpassing FIIs whose ownership fell to approximately 16.84 percent, a 50-quarter low. As a result, the assets held by FIIs and DIIs total around Rs 69.58 lakh crore and Rs 69.80 lakh crore, respectively. The strong domestic buying wave that started at the end of September 2024 is followed by this crossing. According to data from the NSE and NSDL, respectively, DIIs invested more than Rs 3.97 lakh crore during this time, while FIIs sold more than Rs 2.06 lakh crore.
